Journalism
In December 2006, Sal wrote a tribute to actress Olivia DeHavilland for Gate House Media, one of the nation's biggest newspaper publishers. Since that issue, Gate House has published his essays on other American icons with whom he has inter-acted and/or photographed, namely, Billy Graham, Lady Bird Johnson, Carmen Basilio, Susan Sontag, Helen Forrest, and John F. Kennedy. Future subjects for this series will include: Cesar Chavez, Frank Sinatra Jr., Shirley Chisholm, Telly Savalas, poet laureate Billy Collins, Count Basie, soprano Roberta Peters, Rev. Jesse Jackson.
Articles and Guest Essays
For its many prestigous organizations, this reference-point may look more like alphabetical name-dropping than documentation, but Articles and Guest Essays by Sal Parlato Jr have appeared at least once (often more frequently) in the journals of these professional organizations dating from the early 1970s until as recently as June 2006:
American Annals of the Deaf (the oldest scholarly journal in the US), Association for Educational Communications and Technology, Democrat and Chronicle/Gannett (Rochester, NY), Educational Film Library Association, R.R. Bowker & Company, Deaf Life, Deaf Rochester News, English International, Gallaudet University, Hands-On English, Hearing Loss Association of America, International Quorum, Journal of Visual Literacy (consulting editor with Paolo Freire and John Culkin), Life After Deafness, Media and Methods, National Association of the Deaf, National Education Association, New York State TESOL, Self Help for Hard of Hearing Persons, Silent News, Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages, Times-Union (Rochester, NY), US Information Agency, University of California at Berkeley, Washington (DC) Film Council, et al.)
Letters to Editors
For this genre, one-hundred (100) makes a nice round number to claim but it's one that because of easily-retrieved, year-by-year files can be numerically documented. Most but not all have been published since 1991 in Sal's home-town Gannett newspaper, the Rochester Democrat and Chronicle which, in 2002 and 2005, has given him its Golden Pen Award for "letters that are concise and that express strong opinions." Others have appeared in these papers, magazines, or journals:
The Buffalo News, City News, Deaf Life, Deaf Rochester News, Golden Times, Hearing Health, Life After Deafness, Messenger-Post News, NEA Today, Silent News, Times-Union (Rochester, NY), Videography, and TESOL National News. ![]()
